A new new study finds that radiation leaking from Starlink's satellites are affecting astronomers' attempts to pick up radio signals from the cosmos. The study was published on July 3rd in Astronomy & Astrophysics. All satellites emit and receive radio waves to and from our planet to communicate with their operators on the ground. Radio astronomers have known about this for years, and have been able to compensate for their affects by various methods. But in the new study, researchers apparently have shown that Starlink satellites also emit unintended and previously unrecognized radio signals that are separate from the signals they send to and receive from our planet. Some of these signals overlap with those detected by the dishes of radio telescopes. Starlink is likely not the only culprit for this problem, and this problem is only likely to get worse as the number of private satellites grows rapidly.
